UK Pro Tour Enters Dragon Territory

28th October 2009 The Welsh leg of the UK Pro Surf Tour is fast approaching. The elite of UK Surfers will be making their way to Porthcawl for the biggest surfing event in Wales this year.

Winners from the past have included: Nathan Phillips (Llantwit), Mark Harris (Newquay), Matt Capel (S Devon) and Russell Winter (Newquay) all of which will be competing for this year’s title.

For the first time there will be an Under 16 Boys division. Current tour leader Leon Mansfield (Newquay) will be up against local favourite Max Tucker (Porthcawl) amongst many others vying for the inaugural title.

Rest Bay in South Wales is the location for the AXL / DOH Pro on the 31st October and the 1st November Marketing Manager Simon Tucker said "the location is perfect. Porthcawl is one of the only locations in the UK that is one mile away from a motorway and has a fantastic number of surfing spots, catering for the advanced and beginner. Hopefully the weekend of the contest will showcase some great waves as well as great surfing."

AXL Distribution Ltd and Double Overhead Ltd are locally owned businesses proud to bring to Porthcawl the UK Pro Tour. Brad Hockridge commented, "in these tough times we are stoked to be able to put Porthcawl on the pro surf tour map. We are proud of our roots, a lot of Welsh, British and European Champion surfers have come out of Porthcawl and are still continuing to do so, surfers can bring a lot of revenue to our town and we want to promote the area."

The two companies are licensees for Independent, Santa Cruz, The Realm and Carve Eyewear in Europe, distributing to about 33 countries. The company also distributes Billabong, JS Surfboards, Sanuk and Kustom in the UK, as well as having two retail stores in Porthcawl. AXL and DOUBLE OVERHEAD are managed by top British and Welsh surfers, skaters and snowboarders. A mixed cocktail of work and pleasure exists for most employees at the companies, nearly all are involved in an extreme sport, and the lifestyle of these two companies goes way beyond the boardroom.
